A little while ago I wrote about communication tips for speaking with people who have aphasia. All of those tips would help people who also have apraxia. Since apraxia of speech affects speech differently I would like to add these to the list.

  1. When you are speaking, ensure that you are speaking clearly, no mumbling

  2. Speak in a normal voice, not too loud or too soft

  3. Look right at the person with apraxia; they may need to see how you form the words in order for them to say them.

  4. Sometimes they may need to say the word several times in order for them to feel good about the production. give them the time they need to do this. Over time this may get easier.

  5. they might also say a word incorrectly but if the listener can understand what they are saying only say the word once and leave it alone. This is perfectly ok and can mean progress. Let the person with apraxia decide which is the best strategy.
