Catching Small Wins

It’s has been hard to see the incremental gains in my speech since I had the stroke almost 2 years ago. I wish that I thought this sooner, but I have been using a recorder app on my iPad. At first before I could say much, I felt really self conscious and didn’t want to hear what I sounded like. I see brave people posted videos on Facebook or youtube. I’m so in awe of them and wish that I had done this to document my process. It’s noticing the small gains that brings you hope of recovery.

There are many ways to document your progress. You don’t have to post them or have anyone see/hear what you make. It can be only for you if you want.

When I first started recording myself, I tried to say the same things. my name, family names, days of the week, months of the year, etc. Over time, I started recording conversations I had with family especially on the phone. I was also only interested in my side of the conversation. I wish I had done this early as if could have shown the full extent of my speech gains.

Now, I’m participating in the toastmasters group at BU Aphasia Center. Next week, I’m supposed to do a 4 minute introduction. That early practice will come come in handy. I know that I’ve come so very far in my recovery. It’s nice to see some of that documented so I’ll never forget.

I like the idea of recording yourself and I need to do this with my son when he is reading out loud so he can hear the words he is struggling with.

Thank you for reading, Recording myself was hard at least at the beginning. We don’t want to hear the mistakes. But focusing on the progress is important and encourages me to keep going.
