If you were here last Friday, you know that I am sharing a Free Write on Fridays during the month of January. I did the free write today (see below) and then I opened up my email and saw the suggested topic that Paul sent for today - share a process that you have. It's synchronicity at play. My free write was about Driving after Stroke and with Aphasia. Before the stroke, driving was a rote activity. I had been driving for over 40 years. But if you remember what it was like when you first started driving, you will know how I felt trying to drive again after the stroke. I had to really concentrate on everything - and I mean everything. Did I feel awake and alert before attempting to drive? I had to be conscious about putting on my seatbelt first. Making sure my mirrors and seat were set. Making sure I actually put the car in the right gear. make sure my foot was on the right pedal. Not having any distractions - like the radio or talking to other people. Noticing everything around me. Driving is very active and uses a lot of cognitive energy.
I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone but this is driving to me. It has gotten a bit easier in the last 3 years.
Here goes.. setting my timer to 15 minutes.
your post really took me into your mind and the challenges you faced and obviously conquered as you started driving again... thank you.. Vidya
