Even before attending my first outpatient speech therapy session, I used a list of apps To practice sounding out words. Apraxia of speech is a motor disorder. Your brain may know what the word is but you are unable to physically form the words correctly. I couldn’t say anything or utter any sounds for the first week. And after I got my voice back.I couldn’t say any words clearly. I would know the word I wanted to say, but it would come out wrong. Once I could say consonant and some vowels more clearly, any combination especially consonant digraph, I.e. “sh” was especially difficult. In fact after 20 months I still struggle with these. Since “sh” was difficult I couldn’t say my first name clearly for many months.
Here are some things that helped me practice
Apraxia Therapy app, Tactus Therapy
Speech Therapy for Apraxia app, naed
Small Talk Phonics app, Lingraphica
multisyllable words app
minimal pairs app
Voice recorder app, to record yourself to see your progress
make word cards to practice. Start with one syllable, then progress to 2,3,4 I uses an app to make these cards. Flip Study app.(a free app designed by high school students.)
I have used other resources to help with aphasia and I will include them in another post.
