Sub types of Strokes

From tests such as MRI, CT scans, physicians can sometimes determine the cause of the stroke.

there are 5 types of Ischemic Strokes

  • 30 % are large vessel

  • 20 % are cardioembolic

  • 15 % are small vessel

  • 10 % are other

  • 25% are cryptogenic

In 1 out 4 Ischemic strokes, the cause cannot be determined and it is classified as Cryptogenic, like mine.




There are two types of hemorrhagic strokes:

  • Intracerebral hemorrhage is the most common type of hemorrhagic stroke. It occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, flooding the surrounding tissue with blood.

  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a less common type of hemorrhagic stroke. It refers to bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues that cover it.
