The Power of Small Wins!

Day Two

Recovery after stroke is a journey made up of tiny steps. When we think of progress, it’s easy to picture big milestones—like speaking in full sentences again or being comfortablejoining a group conversation. But the truth is, small wins are the building blocks of recovery.

A small win might be:

  • Saying one word clearly.

  • Reading a short text message out loud.

  • Making eye contact and smiling in conversation.

  • Writing down a shopping list.

  • Joining in a family game, even if just with gestures.

Each little success is proof that your brain is healing, adapting, and finding new pathways.

Why Small Wins Matter

  • They build confidence. Each success reminds you, “I can do this.”

  • They add up. Dozens of tiny steps lead to big change over time.

  • They keep motivation alive. Celebrating progress makes it easier to keep going, even on hard days.

How to Celebrate Small Wins

  1. Keep a “win notebook.” Write down one achievement each day, no matter how small. Looking back on it later will show you how far you’ve come.

  2. Share with someone. Tell a friend, caregiver, or support group. Their encouragement doubles the joy.

  3. Reward yourself. A cup of tea, a favorite song, or just pausing to say, “That was great!” is enough.

Gentle Reminder

Your recovery doesn’t need giant leaps every day. Small wins are progress. They matter, they count, and they are worth celebrating.

Takeaway Tip: At the end of today, write down one small win—maybe even reading this blog counts

NOTE: I used ChatGPT to organize my thoughts and to make sure everything was cohesive. I have aphasia which is a language disorder. Aphasia can make speaking, writing and reading a challenge. Using tools such as ChatGPT can help.

Love what you have to say here! I agree - it is very important to celebrate the small wins, while you are on the way to the bigger ones. I will make sure to celebrate my own small win tonight. Thanks for the inspiration, Cheryl! - Jeanine

Thank you for this article. My mom has genetic aphasia and this is very helpful for me. She is in resistance about it and I'm going to start looking counting the wins for her.

Thank you for reading my post. Is genetic aphasia similar to childhood aphasia? I hope that my tips this month can help.

She is so lucky to have you to look for the wins. Celebrating with family is empowering.
